Robin Hood Mummers Play (By Order of the Sheriff!)

We’re not strangers to performing in the hallowed surroundings of Sherwood Forest, but have often thought to ourselves: ‘We should do more of this.’

For example, we had a jolly old time doing our St George’s Play at the Sherwood Visitor Centre in April 2022. Then we had the privilege of doing our Plough Play by the Major Oak in January 2023 as part of the Wassailing Weekend shenanigans. There’s us, below.

Our Beelzebub is not customarily afraid of much (what with being evil incarnate and all) but even his cold heart skipped a beat when he was pounced upon unexpectedly by Krampus. Fair to say that Krampus made Beelzy nearly poop his Pampus.

None of which really has anything to do with this exciting news.

We are pleased as punch to announce that The Calverton Real Ale and Plough Play Preservation Society (aka. CRAPPPS) is returning to Sherwood in October with a brand-new mummers play by order of The Sheriff Of Nottingham (aka. Mr Richard Townsley). It being Sherwood Forest and all, we thought it was time to spin a yarn about one Robin Hood, legendary outlaw of English folklore.

The script has been penned, and rehearsals for the (coo!) epic world premiere of The Calverton Robin Hood Play begin in September ahead of the big show at the Sherwood Visitor Centre on Sunday 15 October.

More details to follow when we know them – in the meantime, save the date. It would be most splendid to have you with us to witness the first ever outing of this hysterical new piece of history.

Apologies in advance to all serious historians among you.

And the less-than-serious ones while we’re at it. You know who you are.
